Since our last post, we have been able to do a few other fun things. Unfortunately, it is rarely with both parents, but Shade has actually been really good about saying "thanks for taking me" and "we had such a fun day!"
The Detroit Zoo
Shade really wanted to see the "bats." They have bats at the Chicago zoo, but not in Detroit. But by the end of the day, he had forgotten all about the bats because he got to see so many other things. We got there early and took the train to the back of the zoo and started on that side, which worked out real well. A lot of the animals were up moving around before it got too hot.
It was hot, and Shade took advantage of every sprinkler and spray station possible
Giraffes, Kangaroo (no fence!)
Right next to prairie dogs, Flamingos
Under the water (seals, polar bear)
Cool structures
Snakes
Other highlights we got pictures of:
Red Oaks Waterpark (link)
I remember we went here last year when the daily high was in the high 80s, low 90s, and with the cold water and wind, it was still cold at times. So this year we went on the hottest day we could. It reached 104. But since the water was still cold, and there was a constant breeze, it only felt really hot when we were dry. Shade's favorite part was the GIANT splash pad with the water slides (of course).
Boating
Kellen and Shade got invited to go boating with some friends on a Saturday while I was sleeping :( Shade had a blast. They got to go tubing behind a boat, swimming, and they even played tag in the water. Kellen said that every time they stopped the boat to get someone out of the water who had fallen off the tube, Shade went over to the side of the boat and jumped in the water. He has no more fear when wearing his life jacket - one benefit of swim lessons is he no longer fears going under the water.
Farmington Founder's Festival
Each year our little city has a festival with a parade, activities, and booths with fun stuff to buy. After walking around the booths with Kellen for awhile, Shade started a silly conversation:
Shade: I want to get out of this place.
Kellen: Why?
Shade: Because it's too girly here.
Kellen (having never heard Shade use the word "girly" before): What?!
Shade: There are too many girly things here like bracelets and dresses, and even a pink shirt!
Kellen: You don't like all of that girly stuff?
Shade: Even the music is girly. Let's get out of here.
Shade's new thing is he likes to wear underwear over his clothes - he thinks its hilarious...and it is.
