Awhile back I wrote about Shade running 3.76 miles without stopping while training for the Martian Marathon. Well, today was the race! Shade had managed to run a total of 25 miles before the deadline, so he was ready to run the last 1.2 miles with all the other kids. There were over 2,000 other kids there who had done the same thing - although most of them were in school groups. But it was way awesome to see so many kids excited to run! Shade did really well - he ran the entire way, and all by himself. A lot of the parents went with their kids, but when Kellen asked Shade if he wanted him to run along, Shade said no and took off. When we asked him later why he didn't want Kellen to run with him, he said he just wanted to see if he could do it all by himself :) And he did the 1.2 miles in about 15 and a half minutes (about a 12:55 minutes per mile pace). Pretty awesome for a 4 year old! And then Shade got a martian medal that said he had run the entire length of a full marathon!
As for Kellen, he ran his first half marathon today! He was pretty nervous that he would even be able to finish since he had hurt his ankle 2 weeks ago and then hurt his knee this last week. But he took a knee brace with him and did it anyway. Well, the weather was awfully cold that day - bad to be out in, but perfect to run in. So Kellen actually did great! He finished in 1 hour, 43 minutes, 48 seconds! (The time in the picture is off a few minutes since it took him awhile to get to the starting line, but his badge had a timer on it.) That is running 13.1 miles at about 7:55 (minutes) per mile pace! He figured he wasn't going to do much better than his last long run - in which he did that distance in just under 2 hours, so he was very happy with his time. But of course he is paying for such a great run now - he is very sore :) But I am very proud of both of my boys!
