I now have a second grader! Again, he refused to stay my little boy... but he is excited to be in a new grade, especially since he gets to ride the bus this year!
Technically, if we would have moved down here last year, they would have made Shade repeat Kindergarten instead of going into First Grade because of his birthday and the deadlines in Georgia. Good thing we were able to wait until this year! He told me that most of the kids in his class are 7 or 8 (he is 6).
But I cannot believe how difficult it was to register Shade for school and how early it started here in Georgia! It was difficult because we had just moved down here and getting proof that we had electricity in our apartment was apparently very specific and difficult to come by. Then we had to have a "vision, hearing, dental" check signed off. Hauling around three kids, not the easiest errands. But then school started on AUGUST 6TH!!! I mean, I thought it was kind of weird that in Michigan it started so late (the Tuesday after Labor Day), but we should have had a couple extra weeks to get settled in before we had to worry about school... especially since it does not mean that Shade gets out of school for the summer that much earlier. And as if the earlier start date wasn't hard enough on the poor kid, but his school starts at 7:40 in the morning! His bus comes at 7:05! That makes for very early bedtimes and mornings. No more sleeping in for any of us! Oh, well. It is an adjustment, but worth it for the other benefits we get for being here. Here's to second grade!
