So I finally decided to have my stomach muscles looked at. I know I shouldn’t care about my appearance so much, but I feel like something is wrong more than just a normal “diastasis recti.” I have a hard time keeping good posture, I have a hard time running long distances, and I have lower back pain. Plus, I am so small, that having separated muscles makes me look like I am still pregnant and none of my clothes fit anymore. So it is something that we agreed to pay to have fixed (since it is considered “cosmetic,” insurance will not pay for it).
I finally picked a surgeon that has over 20 years of experience and some good ratings. After my initial consultation, I feel good about going through with it. He said that most women who get separated muscles from pregnancy have about 2-3cm of separation, and mine was up to 7cm! I wasn’t the least bit surprised, and I found myself being angry about my pregnancy with Eli all over again. But he then talked to me about a new procedure he is trying to implement into the plastic surgery world for this specific condition – using a silk worm silk mesh to connect the super-separated muscles to make it stronger than just a few stitches (as with a regular diastasis recti). It cost a little bit more for the extra materials and time it would take to do the procedure, but we decided it would be worth it so that it would have a smaller chance of reversing itself over time, especially since it is so severe. So the whole thing will be expensive, but strangely enough, God has blessed us with some extra financial assistance lately (via Kellen’s financial prowess), so on to better health – physically and mentally!
