5K CANCER RUN

So apparently it is now our "tradition" to run the Komen cancer 5K in downtown Detroit. We ran it again this year (actually May 22nd) even though we didn't have much time to train for it :) We also forgot our camera, so no pictures.

Kellen actually organized a "Bosch" team this year which raised $700. At first, it was the only team that was organized that did not have a cancer survivor...until we found out there was a late registerer - no cancer for 5 years now. We got to run with her for the fisrt little bit - made it more meaningful.

So last year we didn't get to the starting line until they shot the starting gun - and ended up behind all the runners and spent the first mile or so trying to weave through the slow runners (20,000 people can make it kind of congested). This year we ended up behind all the WALKERS (an even bigger group behind the runners) when the gun went off! What a feat that was! It took us several minutes to even get up to the starting line :) It was because we made the mistake of trying to use the bathroom before the race. Dang bathroom lines were incredulous. They let the women in the men's bathroom because the women's line was so long, and even then that line ended up being just as long. Kellen said they had a separate bathroom for men only on the other side of the stadium - no line, no wait...

As far as running time goes - who knows... Kellen kept pace with me because he was pushing Shade, and like I said we hadn't trained - it took us 24 minutes just to get to the end of the second mile - we ran the last mile in 9 minutes. There were little kids running the whole way too. I remember at the end there was a kid in front of me - a bit heavy set and must've been around 12 - and I was thinking "I can't let this little kid beat me!" So I pushed a bit faster, and barely beat him :) Hey, I had to find little things to motivate me along the way or I would've stopped running before the end of the first mile.

The weather was actually quite nice. Cloudy, a bit rainy (so there was a fine mist in our faces along the race - very awesome), not too hot. We even saw a couple of people we knew from church and school.

And Shade was a good kid - only he wanted to splash in every puddle he saw which made him hard to manage at times. But he fell asleep during the race. Afterward we went home and made up some nice, juicy burgers :) Gotta love running.

I love when they start talking! It's so exciting. Sounds like Shade is doing awesome with it, too. Hope you are all doing well!
